Languages Canada, a new association formed by the merger of CAPLS (Canadian Association of Private Language Schools) and CLC (Canadian Language Council) was launched in Ottawa on March 7th, 2008. Sheila attended the inaugural conference of the association and was very impressed with the work that has been done and is confident that Languages Canada will increase Canada’s profile as a study destination for international students. Languages Canada will provide a strong identity for the Canadian language training sector. It used the existing CLC Quality Assurance Scheme as the basis for accreditation and the marketing, organizational and advocacy strength from CAPLS to form the basis for the new association. Both CAPLS and CLC received recognition by the Canadian government in April of 2006 and their respective members are included on the federal government’s Accredited Schools Registry, currently hosted at www.langcanada.ca.
